General Hospital Synopsis
General Hospital
is an Emmy-winning American daytime soap opera that began airing in 1963. It followed the lives of the staff and their families at the titular hospital in the fictional Port Charles, New York. In the last decade, the focus has largely shifted away from the hospital and onto the city’s mob presence.
General Hospital struggled in the ratings for many years but was brought back from the brink of cancellation with the popular Luke and Laura romance. Approximately 30 million people tuned in to watch Luke and Laura’s wedding in 1981.
Recently General Hospital became the first of ABC’s soaps to offer streaming episodes online. Starting in April 2009 it will become only the second daytime drama, after The Young and the Restless, to be filmed in high-definition.
