I was doing some consultation work the other week for an internet TV station which had me working with School kids, aged 13-18. I was amazed at how iPod happy these kids were. Practically every kid there owned an iPod, and if they didn’t, they wanted one. Congratulations Apple on one very successful marketing campaign!
I knew iPods were popular but I just didn’t know that kids were so into them. I’m not a big fan of the iPod, I’ve tried it but prefer my Creative MP3 player and if I was going to get a portable media player I would probably get an Archos.
One reason I don’t like the iPod is I don’t like having the iTunes store forced upon me so heavily. I experience the same problem with Sony MP3 players which lock me into its own system if I want to transfer files. I much prefer the drag and drop system like you would do copying files to a regular USB memory stick or moving files around on your PC, but that’s just me.
I find it quite scary that all these kids are becoming so transfixed with the iPod. I didn’t bother trying to explain to them about all the crappy DRM that they were encouraging, which is my main reason for hating the iPod.
I dread to think that these kids would waste their precious cash downloading an overpriced DRM packed video from the iTunes store.
