Hulu Plus has arrived on the PS3. Unfortunately, it’s only a preview version of the service, it’s invitation-only, and it requires a subscription to Playstation Plus. In other words, it’s hard to get, it’s expensive, and it’s very limited.
Hulu Plus
is the new premium service from Hulu. For $9.99 a month, subscribers gain access to Hulu on devices other than their computer, and the option of watching full seasons of new and classic shows.
Hulu Plus is currently in beta, with invited viewers giving feedback on how the service is working. But early reviews have been mainly positive.
Hulu Plus For Playstation Plus
Hulu Plus has now found a home on the PS3 games console from Sony. The $10 subscription fee still applies, and the lucky few will be chosen from those gamers with Playstation Plus subscriptions ($49.99 a year).
This is invite-only, with everyone able to download 28MB application but only a few of those chosen to get access to the preview version of the full service. Eventually, Hulu Plus will be offered to all PS3 owners in the U.S., with those of us resident elsewhere once again missing out altogether.
Limited Library
However, even the lucky invitees are presently only getting a limited selection of the videos anyone in the U.S. can view on Hulu’s free website. At least according to some users on the Hulu forums (via NewTeeVee).
This appears to also apply to those using Hulu Plus on the iPad. Apparently, this is down to the licensing rights on some content, which allow it to be viewed on the Web but not on mobile or living room devices. Which is a bizarre discrepancy.
Conclusions
It’s good to see Hulu Plus coming to the PS3, as I firmly believe (and have said on many occasions) that games consoles are an important platform for online video. Let’s just hope Hulu Plus comes out of beta soon and then lives up to its potential.
