President ObamaBarack Obama is hoping to remain as President of te United States of America when the U.S. election rolls around again in November 2012. And he’s used online video, specifically YouTube, to begin his campaign for re-election to the highest office in the land.

Presidential Election Campaign

U.S. President Barack Obama has launched his campaign for re-election a full 19 months before the voters of America will be able to have their say. Politically that says a lot about the state of politics, especially in the United States where almost half of a president’s term in office is dedicated to being elected for another four years.

But putting politics aside, it’s the method of how President Obama has launched his bid to remain at the White House that is interesting. Forget glossy posters and continual television ads, because the Web now rules supreme. And online video is an essential tool in the arsenal.

It Begins With Us

The video President Obama’s team released to launch his re-election campaign is titled It Begins With Us, and really tries to connect with the grassroots supporters who will get involved in the bid to see Obama remain as president through to 2017.

The video appears both on Obama’s website and on YouTube:

The video has been accompanied by a mass email sent to supporters, and Facebook and Twitter campaigns. All of which are avenues Obama and his campaign team used to help build support and get elected in the first place.

Conclusions

Obama has used the Web and online video to connect and communicate with voters right from the start. In the two year run-in to him being elected his team uploaded 1800 videos which were viewed 110 million times. His inauguration speech then became the biggest online video event of all time with an estimated 70 million views. Finally, in office his weekly addresses to the nation came in the form of YouTube videos as well as radio broadcasts.

So we should hardly be surprised that this is once again his chosen medium for reaching out for grassroots supporters.
