The Archos 605 Wi-Fi Portable Media Player is part of a new generation of media players which utilise the Web for content. For the first time, you can now stream content from the Internet to your TV using a media player.
Using the Archos 605’s Wi-Fi feature, you can download media content from the net using the Archos content portal. This offers movies, TV shows, and music for download to your portable media player.
This enables you to be no longer tied to a PC or Mac, and instead be able to download content easily to a device which has a full-colour 4.3-inch touch screen capable of showing an 800 x 480 picture resolution.
Web Browser With Flash Support
The player also comes with the Opera Web browser, with Adobe Flash support, meaning Web video sites such as YouTube, DailyMotion, and Revver are all fully viewable on the device.
Another plug-in available for the player enables users to transfer movies and TV shows recorded via the DISH network set-top box straight to the Archos 605. So you enjoy DVD quality programmes on the move.
Video Demonstration Of Features
Charbox, the webmaster at ArchosFans.com filmed a demonstration of some of the Web TV capabilities of the the 605 in Paris recently, and here is the embedded YouTube video:
Supported Formats
The Archos 605 is able to hold 40 movies at a time, depending on the size of each one. It supports MPEG-4, WMV, protected WMV, MPEG-2, VOB, and H.264, although some may require extra plug-ins to be purchased.
Value For Money?
The 30GB version available from Amazon.com costs $279, which compared to the price of a similarly sized Apple iPod is cheap, especially when the Archos can do so much more.
Some of the plug-ins and add-ons needed to do everything featured in this article cost extra, but for a basic system, which with a few extra dollars spent can enable you to enjoy streaming and downloaded movies and television, the price cannot be beaten.
